On my recent road trip, equipped with the Yaesu FT-100D mobile, I had really hoped to connect with some friends on 20 or 40 meters. Propagation was good enough and in just the right direction that I should have been able to.
However, it was not to be. I didn't realize that there were two different contests running that weekend.
Have you ever noticed that whenever a contest is running everyone's signal is 59 and yet nobody can actually communicate? God forbid you should want a rag chew with old friends. Only an idiot like me would be interested in the performance of a newly installed mobile antenna and want an actual signal report.
I remember a discussion long ago about limiting contests to certain subsections of each band. I would love to see that happen.
